Welfare drug-test debate rekindled in Ohio
A Republican state senator from Lancaster says he hopes to break “the cycle of drug-induced poverty” by requiring Ohio adults seeking welfare to first pass a drug test.
Sen. Tim Schaffer gave the first testimony yesterday on his legislation to create a drug-testing pilot program for Ohio Works First, the state’s cash-assistance program.
Similar laws have passed in Arizona, Florida and Missouri, and several other states are considering them. But the initiatives have not been without controversy.
This is a waste of money. All the data indicates that welfare recipients overwhelmingly pass their drug (expensive) tests. Also, this means that the children of anyone who happens to be addicted to drugs will suffer even more than they already do.
